LUXEMBOURG – Last week hopes got up for some of us after the announcement that the government of Luxembourg was considering a debate regarding a potential return to the Eurovision Song Contest but according to Télépro and their interview with Steve Schmit, director of programming for RTL Luxembourg the possibility seems highly unlikely.
The problem is basically the money. RTL is a small broadcaster despite the fact that they are commercial broadcaster and can take over sponsorships and advertisements. RTL strategy regarding their programs is focused on information and magazines. Though a potential Eurovision participation under a sponsorship is not out of the question.
One other problem is what will happen in case they win. After all Luxembourg has a big history with five victories in the Eurovision Song Contest. Hosting the event is out of the question due to costs, although we have seen countries like Sweden making a great event with a really low budget or Malta hosting Junior Eurovision with a great success.
Schmidt also points out that Luxembourg cannot shine in Eurovision anymore due to the voting system as it is includes the public voting. After all he thinks that small countries do not do well in the contest.
