SBS.COM.AU REPORTS – Eurovision runner-up, Australia’s Dami Im has received superstar treatment for her home town return to Logan. Since her Eurovision success, she’s had non-stop engagements but chose to perform at her old school as a way of saying thanks. It’s a long way from Eurovision but Logan is very close to Dami Im’s heart. There was anything but the sound of silence from students and the public at her former school as she performed her Eurovision hit. The once shy school girl Dami Im is now an international star of the Eurovision variety.
“Yeah, it’s amazing to come home to this big crowd who welcomed me today and I’m so thankful for everybody’s support and very excited to be home finally.”
The South Korean-born artist migrated to Australia aged nine and grew up in Logan, south of Brisbane. Dami Im’s international success is a huge coup for culturally diverse Logan, which has slowly been rebuilding its reputation after years of negative publicity. Mayor Luke Smith welcomed Dami Im home.
“I just want to formally congratulate you Dami. We are so incredibly proud, you are a sensation, not just around the world but for those of us here in Logan. It means a lot to us that you came back and allowed us to put on this celebration for you. Congratualtions and thanks you so much.”
Representing Australia at Eurovision built on Dami reality television fame and three albums. Coming second in Eurovision cemented her star status, especially in Logan. A former teacher is Helena Munoz Fernandez who watched her hometown performance.
“She’s a huge inspiration for our children, for them to think beyond what they usually think they could achieve. It brings big things closer to them.”
Students too are impressed. “We’re all excited to see Dami, we’re all excited to see her success, in Eurovision, we’re all really happy and we hope that more students can be successful in this way as well.”
Dami will next travel to Uganda to visit a child she sponsors and is considering her career options. That’s on top of her busy schedule promoting a new album. “It’s only been a week since I came home, so it’s early days but at the moment I’m just excited about all the opportunities and how much potential there is and I’m just excited to try out whatever I can.”
