UMK 2014: FIRST HEAT RESULTS
HELSINKI, FINLAND – Hyvää iltaa! After three presentation shows, the first heat of UMK-Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (New Music Competition) was held tonight, live from the Peacock-Teatteri in Helsinki. The show was hosted by Ilkka “Ile” Uusivuori and Anne Lainto. Out of the 6 entries performed tonight, one was directly sent to Espoo for the final on February 1st, while 5 other songs proceeded to the second chance round to be held on January 25th. So only one song was actually eliminated tonight. The public has had the opportunity to vote since last Monday and a professional jury also cast its vote.
The first six songs presented today for the first elimination show. During the show we heard songs like MIAU’s Vanilla Ninja alike attempt, a smooth and good vocally performed ballad by Dennis Fagerström and a well performed electro pop song with 90s sounds by Lili Lambert. Hukka Ja Mamma performed their Beth Ditto copycat in Finnish and got great reception from the audience. Softengine gave us a British pop rock entry and Jasmin Michaela performed a latino-pop-finnish rock (don’t ask me what it means).
Once thing is almost certain, we haven’t heard Eurovision 2014 winner tonight, and I’m not even sure we’ve heard UMK2014 laureate to be honest. The show was rather well produced but the overall quality of songs has left me disappointed… This definitely was the weakest of the two semi-finals. But at least, as in previous years, UMK has kept its promise of very different music styles to choose from. One cannot say that the Finnish audience doesn’t have a wide range of choices this year.
