Sweden 2018 🇸🇪 our review for the fourth semi final
Song 1 – Emmi Christensson – “Icarus” – Predict Andra Chansen
Emmi is from a musical theatre background including the starring role of Christine within Phantom of the Opera in London’s West End. Her daily performance experience should give her an advantage of selling her debut entry “Icarus.” The classical Greek mythological legend is the basis of this song. The song itself is the epitome of a Eurovision classic combined with some impressive visuals. The only thing holding her back is she is fairly unknown outside theatre circles.
Song 2 – Elias Abbas – “Mitt Paradis” (My Paradise) – Predict 5th Place
Another Latin inspired entry from the youngest performer this year, Elias. At only 16, Elias has already released his popular first single “Mitt Queen” (My Queen) and now he is ready for a bigger stage. As a rapper by nature, “Mitt Paradis” has the best combination of pop, rap and Latin influence to make this one to watch. Unfortunately, I think Emmi will beat him with her overall visuals though.
Song 3 – Felicia Olsson – “Break That Chain” – Predict 7th Place
In her dynamic return, Felicia has not only shed hundreds of pounds but she’s lost some of her dramatic pull. She got the dreaded 5th place back in 2013 in a very crowded with her song “Make Me No 1.” Felicia’s new song, “Break That Chain,” does update her sound but from the more dramatic ballad to a mid tempo pop song that will probably get lost in the toughest semifinal of 2018. There’s nothing wrong with it but it’s just nothing special.
Song 4 – Rolandz – “Fuldans” (The Ugly Dance) – Predict Andra Chanson
Now onto something that has the opposite problem, Rolandz are a comedy danceband that were big in 2009-2012. Rolandz have had a break and now are back to claim their place. Their OTT performance of the bizarre but pure fun song will have the Swedes going ga ga again. A lot of people feel this will go directly to the final but I think that Felix will easily steal their place with his quality over their novelty performance.
Song 5 – Olivia Eliasson – “Never Learn” – Predict 6th Place
Olivia is very unknown to most but she was discovered after she released a cover Anton Ewald’s “Beggin’” from Melfest 2013. Since then she has recorded a duet with Anton on the song “Human.” Olivia is a very competent singer and “Never Learn” is a great debut but it lacks something. The performance centres around neon dancers amongst heavy neon style lighting. It just comes across as a Junior Eurovision entry rather than the adult contest.
Song 6 – Felix Sandman – “Every Single Day” – Predict Direct to the Final
One fourth of The FOOO Conspiracy and a third of last year’s FO&O who placed 11th in the Melfest final with “Gotta A Thing About You.” FO&O have decided to take a break and Felix has decided to compete on his own with his sincere ballad, “Every Single Day.” The genuinely delivered ballad without too any fireworks should win big the audience. There has been a lot of talk of his health this week due to a massive cold but Felix is a pro and should get through his performance tonight without too much difficulty.
Song 7 – Mariette – “For You” – Predict Direct to the Final
Now onto the favourite, Mariette is back with her third attempt at the crown. After finishing third in 2015 with “Don’t Stop Believing” and fourth last year with “A Million Years,” many think this is Mariette’s year. She was the odds on winner since the announcement of her participation until this week which now has Benjamin Ingrosso and Jessica Andersson ahead of her. The song isn’t bad but in my opinion not her best but she has a big production planned with a massive rising platform for her performance. She will qualify for the final easily but is the song good enough to win?
