SONGVAKEPPNIN 2013: REVIEW OF THE SONGS
The team of oikotimes.com is listening the Eurovision bid entries for the national finals across Europe and review the songs for each national final when available. Today we present you the review of our website for the entries from Iceland for the Söngvakeppnin 2013. 12 acts will be competing in 2 semifinals, and only 6 of them will reach the grand final.
Both semifinals of the Icelandic preselection will kick off this weekend, and the 6 candidates from each one, will try to demonstrate they’re the right choice to represent Iceland in Malmö but only 3 of them from each semifinal, will be going through the next phase: THE FINAL. Do you wanna find out who they are and how their songs look? Take a look at our reviews:
1. Yohanna – ÞÚ
This is a really nice entry, with a very positive sound element, but you may think: ‘This is not the song, I was expecting for her’. So on, it couldn’t be enough to reach the contest in May, even though it’s catchy and Yohanna has a very sweet voice, which she knows how to use it, for the audience to receive very well, what she is singing. (7/10)
2. Magni Ásgeirsson – EKKI LÍTA UNDAN
He has a very powerful rock song, in his typical music style. The runner-up of 2012 has lots of chances to qualify with this interesting song, which includes some original sounds at the beginning. It could be the dark horse of this year’s edition of Söngvakeppnin. (7/10)
3. Svavar Knútur Kristinsson og Hreindís Ylva Garðarsdóttir Hólm – LÍFIÐ SNÝST
It’s the bad and cheap number of the other couple. We have to recognise, the song is not bad, but it needs to be stronger, and also connect a little bit more with the audience, who is listening to it. Will see how the artists sing on stage…it will be decisive, but for us, this is not passing the semifinal. (6/10)
4. Edda Viðarsdóttir – SÁ SEM LÆTUR HJARTAÐ RÁÐA FÖR
Typical nice ballad, not very special. Slow, with a powerful melody, and also a big ending. In our opinion, no chances to qualify, as in Eurovision, it could not have many possibilities to make Iceland proud of her entry, or get a high place at least. (6/10)
5. Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson – ÉG Á LÍF
Loads of fans love this song, we think it’s because, it has something really lovely, and the refrain is quite catchy. The singer seems he will be good on stage, but we have our doubts to think, this song will reach the final. (7/10)
6. Birgitta Haukdal – MEÐAL ANDANNA
Interesting and misterious song, sung by the 2003 Iceland representative, who is trying again to reach Eurovision. The style is totally different from the one, who Birgitta presented in Riga 2003. With a lot of chances to qualify and with some new arrangements, it could be the perfect song to represent Iceland in Malmö. (9/10)
7. Klara Ósk Elíasdóttir – SKUGGAMYND
She presents another ballad, at this competition with a nice melody and some powerful strings in the background but despite this, it’s not too interesting, as it’s like if we could have already listened in radios before, by popular artists. (5/10)
8. Jógvan Hansen og Stefanía Svavarsdóttir – TIL ÞÍN
One of the best songs and acts, as well. It seems they will be doing well on stage, but it reminds a little bit of Greta & Jónsi, don’t you think? Anyway, the song is quite addictive. We think, despite last year’s result with a duet, Iceland could be sending a couple again. For sure, they will be in the final. (9/10)
9. Sylvía Erla Scheving – STUND MEÐ ÞÉR
Another similar song like the one, we could listen from Klara. Not very powerful in its genre, and not interesting at all. So, it’s a like a mix between a ballad and the typical swedish song not very remarkable. No chances to see her at Eurovision. (5/10).
10. Haraldur Reynisson – VINNÁTA
Nice song, but only that. Nothing special. Haraldur has lots of chances to…not going trough on Saturday. Quite boring, as well. (5/10)
11. Unnur Eggertsdóttir – ÉG SYNG!
Unnur presents a very different song from the others, with very positive elements, the one which you think it’s normal at the beginning, but when the song is advancing you can realise about the catchy part of it. It could be perfectly used for Junior Eurovision, instead of ESC. Lots of chances to qualify. (7/10)
12. Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir – AUGNABLIK
It’s the typical song, which you will always remind of Iceland. Very epic and it sounds like an anthem, as Never Forget did. For us, the best act from Iceland and the one, we think that has the most of chances to reach Malmö. We are pretty sure Erna is doing a great job for the audience to vote for her. (10/10).
To sum up: our clear favorites and acts, they will be in the final of Söngvakeppnin are: Erna Hrönn, Birgitta Haukdall, Jógvan & Stefanía, Unnur Eggertsdóttir
But, we still have some feelings about the rest. From the first semifinal, it would be between, Yohanna and Magni Ásgeirsson and from the second, between Klara & Sylvía.
From our team, we want to wish good luck, to all the participants! Let the best song win!
