Slovenia 2015: interview with Maraaya
LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA – The team of oikotimes.com is following closely the Slovenian national selection, EMA 2015 through which the country will decide its participation to Vienna’s Eurovision Song Contest next May. We interviewed all of the eight participants of the Slovenian national final and we present you today our interview with Maraaya in collaboration with Evropesma.org.
Hello Maraaya. Thank you for having a chat with us and making this interview for our readers.
Thank you for contacting us. We hope that oikotimes readers will enjoy it.
At first, I would like to ask you to tell us a bit of yourself, so people can meet you better.
Marjetka: We like to think of ourselves not only as artist-singers but as two people, living in this great world of music, creating, recording songs, teaching youngsters, producing stuff… Releasing songs is one of the things we do as Maraaya. We are couple music-wise and in our private life – we have been married for 5 years, our name – Maraaya – is actually “puzzle” of our names – Marjetka & Raay – MARAAYA.
When did you decide to apply for EMA 2015?
Raay: In the past year we’ve been preparing material – songs for our EP, including 4 singles to be released in next 2 years. So we’d had 4 songs already there and the hardest thing was to choose which one of those singles would fit the most for presentation at EMA 2015 and to follow our first hit single Lovin’ me. We had used a lot of help of our friends and different people before we decided.
Can you tell us something about your song?
Marjetka: It’s a mixture of indie-pop with soulful elements… Maybe with a taste of neo-soul… And of course with catchy melody. The lyrics were written by Charlie Mason, the guy that co-wrote Rise Like A Phoenix for Austria last year. He also did our first single Lovin’ me.
Among other contestants, who do you think is your biggest rival?
Marjetka: Well I think that all guessing based on names only is unreliable as at the end this is a Eurovision Song Contest and not Eurovision Singer Contest! Abbreviation stays ESC however!
Raay: From the chosen ones each and everyone has some cool attributes. Jana Šušteršič is the winner of this season of Slovenia Got Talent Show, Rudi Bučar won 2 important festivals in the past year, Alya has just released a brand new CD and is getting great airplay with new single, I.C.E. could be a nice rocky surprise, Tim Kores is the guy that is the most popular from the popular group that became really famous in the only X Factor edition in Slovenia, Martina Majerle has a lot of ESC experiences, Clemens could be a surprise and the two of us – Maraaya – are topping charts on radios currently in Slovenia. So at the end – the songs will be the most important.
What is your favorite Slovenian Eurovision entry and some other favorite Eurovision entry?
Marjetka: This is a tough one. Since we were both a part of last years Slovenian entry with Tinkara Kovač and since the song was declared as a #1 hit among Slovenian songs of the year 2014, probably that would be our first choice. But I remember how we were watching Düsseldorf’s ESC in 2011. with Raay at home and so excited – we were convinced we had the best one that year… Maja Keuc did one hell of a job there – its when Slovenia got its hopes back as we finished #1 from jury in semi-finals!!!
Raay: It’s hard to be objective when you include your song where you are emotionally detached to it and the memories are still fresh. But besides that – I would agree, probably 2011. with Maja Keuc and from the older entries I remember I loved the Tanja Ribič – Zbudi se (’97) and of course Nuša Derenda’s Energy!
Maraaya: We would have to say that it is Lena’s Satelite. It’s trendy, simple, she’s not trying to hard, she didn’t have any circus and still she won. It was thank to her unique voice, interpretation, cool song, great production. You could say that main formula of Germany’s win with Lena was: song!
In the end do you have a message for our readers?
Maraaya: Hope all of u guys will check out all the Slovenian finalists and get to know us – and get to know Slovenian pop music; and of course we hope you will like it.
