SERBIAN EUROFANS RESPOND TO RTS
BELGRADE, SERBIA – Yesterday as a big surprise for fans all over Europe, RTS said that they are withdrawing from the Eurovision contest that will be held in Danish capital, Copenhagen. The news was spread on every media portal and there in the comments big conflict of opinions was seen. Today OGAE Serbia has come out with an official statement for the public. We are reporting it to you in its full content.
OGAE Serbia, an organization that promotes the Eurovision Song Contest, Serbian music and culture in Europe and the rest of the world received the information about Serbia’s withdrawing with disbelief and sorrow.
The Eurovision Song Contest long time ago has stopped to be just the battle of national broadcasters, but it became an event of national significance and interest. If it wasn’t so, than it wouldn’t last for 58 years, and a large amount of countries wouldn’t apply. With more than 100 million viewers every year it is the third most watch television programme in the world, after the Olympics and the World Championship in soccer. The Eurovision Song Contest is the place where everyone can see a lot of differences, but also whole Europe united. In these hard times, Eurovision is a bright spot in the darkness for all Serbian people, as there everyone can feel proud for their country but also experience the spirit of competition.
Recently deceased head of RTS, Aleksandar Tijanić said that our success at Eurovision is way bigger than at European football championship. We are staying stubborn and keeping playing it even though there is no good result achieved. Why then no one suggests that we should withdraw from there? Then we also should not withdraw from the Eurovision. He was also saying that it is our obligation to participate in the contest as we had there more success more than anywhere else. That is the exact reason why the government should help RTS to send a representative next year in Denmark, as we have to participate since we hosted the contest back in 2008. From our previous experiences, we now that the costs of participating with the fee are under 100.000 euros. For that amount of money you can not get cheaper promotion that one country can get.
Also with our withdrawal, the possibility of Kosovo to become a part of the contest could increase. There were few unsuccessful attempts in last few years, and if eventually that happens it could cause big problems to Serbia.
We can not let that our performers lose a chance to represent themselves at an international scene like Eurovision. Maybe we didn’t always shine as much as we thought that we will but we should try to motivate our already affirmed singers to try to participate at an event like this.
That this contest is really important to some countries as good example we can say that FYR Macedonia has chosen Tijana Dapcevic to represent them, and as Montenegrin representative Europe will see Sergej Cetkovic. Also Greece, who lost it’s national broadcaster few months ago will also participate with support of the authorities.
Now when we are striving to join the European Union and when we are waiting for the date when we will start with the accession negotiations, our commitment to participate should be even bigger, as Europe looks at the Eurovision Song Contest as it’s biggest achievement.
OGAE Serbia is also letting you know that they started a petition on facebook, and they are calling you all to support them and also Serbia, so that we can all see a representative from there in Denmark. You can help by liking this page
