INFORMATION ABOUT THIERRY
Manfred Thierry Mugler was born in Strasbourg, France. Passionate for art since he was born, a fan of Italian realistic cinema, peplums, horror films and musicals, Manfred Thierry Mugler decides to join The Opera of the Rhine Ballets at the age of 14. He will work with the company as a professional dancer for six years. During the same time, he joins the School of Decorative Arts and wears his own designed clothes.
At the age of 20, Manfred Thierry Mugler is in search of a more creative outlet and decides to try his luck in Paris in the dance world. His style is immediately noticed at the famous Café de Flore terrace. He sells his fashion sketches. In fifteen days, a designer is born. In 1973, Manfred Thierry Mugler decides to use only his other first name “Thierry”, and creates his first line called “Café de Paris.” He launches the return of “the Parisian in a small black dress”, inspired by the dancers, and the return of the black suit and the trench coat. In 1974, he creates his own label and founds the Thierry Mugler House. Creating a structured and anatomical cut with an impeccable, refined and sexy style, he launches the “unisex suit.” Soon Thierry Mugler opens the new era of the woman-star: he is the first to show the conquering, victorious, strong and sensual woman. He also introduced the revolutionary idea of spectacle within the fashion universe and has been noticed for it since then. In 1998 the Assouline Publications publish a book in France that celebrates the work of Thierry Mugler in the series “The Fashion Universe”. The “new woman” splendor is rapidly reflected in the neat and resolutely modern style of the “Mugler” man.
In 1992, Thierry Mugler and Thierry Mugler Parfums create a stunning perfume: Angel. The scent, original and new, definitively opens a new olfactory field: The oriental voluptuous, heady and gourmand, an unexpected mixture of childish tenderness and sex appeal. The color of the blue juice is an event by itself. The bottle – a finished handmade crystal utopia – is the realization of a universal and eternal symbol which characterizes the search of the designer’s quest for absolute: a star. Within just a few years, Angel becomes a great Classic. Angel is among the 10 most sold perfumes in the world, with a #1 ranking in France and unequalled success to-date. In 1996 Thierry Mugler launches A*Men, their first fragrance for men and in 2001 reinvents the Eau de Cologne with another surprising creation: Mugler Cologne. In 2005 Alien, a flower amber-based solar perfume starts its celestial journey between sky and earth. It has become the second great feminine perfume mainstay within only 3 years.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of his Couture House in 1984, Thierry Mugler organizes a “super show” for his Fall-Winter collection, which is opened to the public. It is sold-out. More than 6,000 people attend this event referred in the press as a “mass”… Since 1974, Thierry Mugler presents his fashion shows like variety shows. Fashion was for him one possible “vehicle” to answer his creative wave. His shows are more than fashion parades: they will influence the history of the artistic world and the media. Stars of music, fashion and entertainment take part in it. Thierry Mugler conceives it all: music, scenery, choreography and lighting. In 1992, he presents his first Haute Couture collection at The Ritz Hotel in Paris, demonstrating the perfect alchemy of talent and know-how. The March 16th, 1996 show, organized for the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of The Mugler House at Le Cirque d’Hiver in Paris, is a never seen before super-production. In twenty years, more than 80 Thierry Mugler shows, from insects to chimeras, jellyfishes among many other creatures and phantasmagoric deeply move the world…
From 1984 to 1989, Thierry Mugler creates costumes for 2 “opéra-ballets”, for a musical, as well as La Comédie Française, and famous French singer Mylène Farmer. In 1976, famous photographer Helmut Newton is hired to shoot the first Thierry Mugler campaign. He seems upset by Thierry making numerous comments. He suddenly raises his camera to Thierry and advises him to shoot his campaign himself! In 1978, Thierry Mugler sets out on his first advertising campaign as a photographer. In 1988, Thierry’s photographs are published in a very beautiful book prefaced by the French Minister of Culture Jack Lang: “Thierry Mugler Photographer” (Editions du Regard, Rizzoli Publications, Thames and Hudson Publications), followed in 1998 by another book: “Fashion Fetish Fantasy” (General Publishing Group USA), a concentrate of his work as a photographer, a showman, and a fashion designer, also seen by renowned contemporary photographers. Fascinated by the gigantism of natural and human architecture, and by the graphics of nature, his photographer’s vision is a very personal point of view, a resolutely more poetic and more graphic angle on life and urban universe. Thierry Mugler Parfums have Thierry Mugler to thank for the international success of Angel, A*men, and Alien’s campaigns. These are campaigns that surprise within the conventional world of the perfume industry and are synonyms with extravaganza and a strong bias.
Deeply attracted by the work of acting, Thierry Mugler takes dramatic art lessons at the famous Cours Florent in Paris during four years between 1982 and 1986. There he studies various roles, including several from Dubillard, Molière and Ionesco.
In 1987, Thierry Mugler writes and directs a short film that airs on the French Television Channel TF1 called “L’antimentale” and in 1990, French Television Channel Canal Plus asks him to create and direct four short films for important actors: Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, Victor Laslow and Dauphine de Jerphanion. The same year, he directs his first advertising film “Gauloises Adventures”. In November 1995, American cable channel VH1 enlists Thierry to direct the opening of the first “Fashion And Music Awards” retransmitted live worldwide. In 2002, famous Canadian company Le Cirque Du Soleil calls upon the multiple talents of Thierry Mugler to create a completely new variety show, in Las Vegas (USA), that is a reinvention of the music-hall and cabaret: “Zumanity”. Thierry Mugler not only creates the costumes but also the characters of the show and directs several acts. The show, launched in September 2003, is a huge success to date. In 2005, Thierry Mugler Parfums decide to launch worldwide a new fragrance: Alien. For the first time Thierry Mugler Parfums produce a TV commercial whose conception, artistic direction and direction are given by Thierry Mugler. He then decides to use his other first name “Manfred”, in order to sign as an artist his new projects and differentiate them from the now world famous cosmetic brand Thierry Mugler. In 2008, world renowned American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles asks for him to assist on her worldwide 2009 “I am…” tour as an artistic consultant. In 2009, the American artist Joey Arias appeals to Manfred Thierry Mugler’s talent to create a show with life-size puppets: “Arias with a Twist”. Famous American puppeteer Basil Twist is part of the adventure. Manfred is the co-conceptor, the artistic director and the costume designer. The show is an immediate success and is rewarded in New York with the GLAAD Media Awards for the best Off-Off Broadway show of the year. The “Mugler Follies” have established in 2013 the proved and multifaceted talent of Manfred Thierry Mugler, who signed at the theater Le Comédia a wildly new show, moving and entertaining, renewing the genre of cabaret. The show meets a great success since its opening. The adventure goes on with the creation of an extraordinary show presented in the biggest and most famous European theater in Berlin: the Friedrichstadt-Palast.
