PORTUGAL – RTP and its national final is involved in a case of plagiarism after the favourite to win the final and represent Portugal at its first Eurovision festival in Lisbon, seems to have copied a song from the 70s.
It has been noted that the song by Diogo Piçarra, “Canção Do Fim” is very similar to a religious song which was famous in the 1970s, the song being “Abre os meus olhos”.
The song was actually not from Portugal but from Brazil, who in turn share the same language and this similarity has forced Diogo Piçarra to make an online statement to defuse the situation.
On social media he has stated that the songs are different and that any similarities are down to creating a song which follows a simple concept and is limited by the melody, since this is only possible up to a defined number.
He went on to state that labelling something as plagiarism is only aimed at destruction and that had he known there was a similarity, he would have created something else. He claims to have a clear conscious and that he feels that there is nothing more to the accusation.
At the moment, RTP have not stated anything regarding the claims and have simply proceeded with business as normal. this Friday will be the Grand Final of the Festival da Canção where the singer and song that will represent the host country shall be chosen.
