Polemic situation in France between government and broadcaster
PARIS, FRANCE – Just like every single year when France comes back home from Eurovision with a poor result, critics are rather strong this year towards the French entrant and the whole FranceTélévisions team. Lisa Angell and the people behind her, who finished 25th in this year’s Grand Final with only 4 points, are undergoing harsh critics, and some come from the government itself.
Last week, on radio station France Inter, Foreign Affairs ministers Laurent Fabius, could not hide his disappointment, not to say his anger to see France in such a low position on the scoreboard again. He called the French act a “tacky” one. He declared: “I watched the winners’ performance, the Swedish guy. I won’t comment on his voice capacities, but this was a show, a modern one, with lights effect etc… In comparison, the French act was a bit like a television show before the very invention of television”.
The woman behind the French act this year, France 2 Head of Entertainment Nathalie André, has reacted quickly. In her opinion, “there are much more dramatic issues in the world that Minister Fabius should comment. But Mrs André’s reaction was a very honest one since she has also agreed on some points. The result was a real punch in our faces. I was stupid enough to go to Vienna with a voice instead of bringing an Enrique Iglesias there. I’m ready to take revenge in 2016 and I’m starting working on it from today”.
Mrs André has realized that “N’Oubliez Pas”, a song in French about World War I, was not a wise choice for the competition. She added “I must admit I’ve been in a washing machine, and that I’m still in the drums! I’ve lived something I had never experienced before in my professional life. If I had to do it again, I would do it the exact opposite way”.
Of course, Nathalie André does not blame her singer Lisa Angell who gave a very good performance on the big night, but the type of song. Since France 2 Head of Entertainment is the person in charge of choosing the French entrant for 2016, we can guess that France won’t send a ballad to Sweden, and that we can expect a real effort this time from the broadcaster to reach Eurovision standards!
Our entrant this year was a beautiful voice, a nice ballad and an emotional act. But, as french commentators declared during the final, Eurovision is now a “night club” competition, and we have to leave it or stick to those news standards, even if we have to give up our language or our cultural exception. Our broadcaster has a few months to make a decision, and probably try to convince some big names or modern acts from the “french Touch” to give Eurovision a go… We have what it takes to achieve good results again.
DID YOU KNOW?
Since 2000, France's results are rather dramatic, reaching the Top 10 in only 3 occasion, 4th in Copenhagen 2001, 5th in Tallinn 2002 and 8th in Moscow 2009. The hexagon finished beyond the 20th position 7 times, reaching a last position for the first time in 2014. The 2015 poor result means that FranceTélévisions has to react!
