AARHUS, DENMARK – Not even ESC itself is huge, the fan base around the world is outstanding. The “OGAE International“ is the world’s biggest fan organisation and is a network of 40 fan clubs in different countries. You might be a member, too. Isn’t it interesting how the fan clubs in other countries are positioned?
We had the chance for a closer look to the very active Danish ESC fan club with a familiar atmosphere. They are a full member of the OGAE International since 1989. Their internet site is called “MelodiGrandPrixFans.dk“. The “Melodi Grand Prix“ determines the country’s representative for the ESC and is a big media event with several live shows in different Danish venues.
Not just the exclusive seats for the OGAE Denmark at the “Melodi Grand Prix” show the very intensive connection between the fan club and the Danish EBU broadcaster DR (Danmarks Radio). But there are lots of other signs. Members of the fan club write articles for the official broadcaster’s blog.
The president of the OGAE Denmark himself – Johann Sørensen – appears on Radio and TV as an ESC expert often. In 2014, after Emmelie de Forest brought the ESC to Copenhagen, he became the official radio commentator for the ESC.
Johann Sørensen as a strong networker is one of the reasons for the success of the fan club. A second key point was the Scandinavian enthusiasm after the victory of Loreen in Baku 2012. The „MelodieGrandPrixFans.dk“ were as strong as never before. The number of members increased from 200 to nearly 1000. But even after the first wave they stand strong with more than 400 active members.
Besides the gamble of fan-tickets for the ESC itself there are a lot of gatherings and events around the year. Oikotimes had the chance to participate at “60 års jubilæumskoncert” in August this year. In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest, OGAE Denmark hosted a concert featuring Sandra Kim, Linda Martin and Magnus Carlsson. The concert held at Radar in Aarhus. Johann Sørensen told oikotimes.com that he started the planning of the event in November 2014. “The longest time takes the contact to the artists management”, he told. “But”, he continued, “even if we can’t pay the highest rates as a self-financed fan club the artist are font of playing for such a thankful and competent audience.”
The fan club hosts three annual meetings, one each on Fyn, Jylland and in the capital København. But there is the great annual general assembly. After discussing subjects, the concerts start. In a very intimate way winners and participants of the ESC perform for the OGAE Denmark. This years “Årsmøde” (annual meeting) is held in “Huset-KBH” a venue in København on November 14th from 4 P.M. until after midnight. The reason is a fantastic line-up: Valentina Monetta from San Marino (ESC 2012, 2013 and 2014), Hera Björk from Island (ESC 2010), Kurt Calleja from Malta (ESC 2012) and more. You have the chance to be part of the event for about 55 Euros.
