MAY 10 PRESS CONFERENCE: EBU / SVT WELCOME YOU
The first press conference in Eurovision Song Contest 2013 is taking place today and EBU with SVT are welcoming the press to Malmoe, Sweden. here are the highlights of the press conference.
:: Regarding the order of appearance change implemented this year, EBU explained that it was an SVT proposal which was approved by the Refrence Group. There was an interesting question about SVT who’s deciding the order of appearance will also know the results of the semifinals. Will they adjust the running order of the final although they know the results? Will it be fair? Jon Ola Sand failed to give a persuaive answer saying that no matter the running order the best song will win anyway!
:: The new official Eurovision app presented and it’s already available for iPhone and Android online. Much more efficient than the old one the app already has dozens of thousands in downloading. Regarding the online voting from the app from an iPhone it will be sent via SMS which means that your vote will be sent from the country where your phone is registered. In Android phone votes will be cast through PayPal to guarantee and secure the country of origin.
:: The post card of Denmark is presented to show the media how things are getting ready and how things will work eventually. Martin Osterdahl is explaining the features and the format of the Eurovision Song Contest 2013.
:: Petra Mede moments in Eurovision and how Eurovision 2013 will include a gift to the fans is explained by SVT’s Christer Bjorkman.
:: Regarding the behind closed doors rehearsals and the work at teh Euroclub, there were complaints about the working conditions. Sietse Bakker said that the decision for closed rehearsals was a request by the delegations and approved by the reference group and pess / media pressure on the very first appearance of the artist on stage was huge and therefore had to be respected. Regarding the working conditions, Mr Bakker said that it was the first time they did this and they will try to improve things for next year.
:: For the final Sweden already decided to be in the 2nd half of the final. The remaining Big 5 they will draw between 3 spots in the first half of the final and 2 from the second half of the final.
:: Regarding the costs of the Eurovision Song Contest EBU said that it’s always a matter of the discussions with the national broadcaster. No matter the cost of the Eurovision Song Contest annually the main concern is to maintain the high quality. We are working on several models and have several tools to help national braodcasters to host any kind of contest they would like. It is not ony expensive to host the show but it’s also expensive to participate and SVT tried to low things for accommodation and participation for delegation, fans and media.
:: Regarding the political issues with Azerbaijan and Belarus EBU responded that no country was under exclusion. It’s national broadcasters who participate in the Eurovision Song Contest and only members in the EBU. We provided lots of knowledge to Azerbaijan for human rights and press freedom, EBU said
:: About the voting presentation EBU said that the the only change inthe appearance is that the first seven points will be visible at the moment the spokeperson appears online so it’s only seconds of difference to speed up the procedure. In the voting in general, EBU said that there is no publication of each country’s jury and public voting because if someone wants to manipulate voting in a country with low televoting it would be easy. Therefore there will be no publication of each country’s split voting. SVT and EBU keep talking about transparency.
:: EBU is also in contact with withdrawn broadcasters to return to the contest. Each broadcaster has different reasoning for their absence for Eurovision but they do lots of things and discussions to help them stay in the years to come.
:: Preliminary dates for Eurovision 2014 are set for May 13, 15 and 17 but they will be confirmed with the winner national broadcaster.
:: China, Australia, Portugal, Bosnia & Herzegovina will broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 (some of the live some of them not).
