MALTA – 2019 will be marked as the year with the less promotional activities and appearances for Michela, the 2019 Eurovision representative of Malta, winner of the first ever X-Factor in Malta. Michela is hard to be found, reached and she already cancelled promo tours. Only two live appearances are set and those will take place in Malta this month. Despite huge efforts to get even a small video message, a written interview is the only thing we got. Let’s fired out Michela’s thoughts. Remember you can always support Michela in our voting poll, Europrediction 2019.
As a then-unknown talent in Malta, she exploded on to the X-Factor stage, leaving the judges speechless. Michela won the final as if it was the only thing she was born to do. Previously, she had won the Music Talent League in Lithuania, was a finalist in the Baltic Voices competition and attended the Ultimate Artist development programme in Hertfordshire London, where she worked with Rihanna’s producer. Michela describes herself as an average teenager. She explains: “… but when I start singing, it’s as if my voice takes over my entire being. Aretha Franklin once said that you sing soul with your whole body. I know exactly what she means.” Michela is currently signed to Sony Music.
Who is Michela Pace?
This must be the most difficult question of them all! But let’s keep it straight to the point – Michela is a determined, down to earth and hardworking girl who will represent her country in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest!
Malta represented by a Gozitan singer… Has it happened before? Does it make any difference?
This is actually the third time that our country is being represented by a Gozitan. No difference at all, the islands are only a few minutes away from each other and there is really no difference between being Maltese or Gozitan.
What made you participate to the very first “X Factor Malta”? Did you have “Eurovision” on your mind already?
My friend encouraged me to participate in X Factor Malta, I loved watching X Factor in other countries but when the brand came to Malta I didn’t know whether to apply or not. Clearly my friend had other plans for me, and they say.. the rest is now history!
If PBS had decided to stick to the “Malta Eurovision Song Contest” national selection show, would you have taken part?
Of course, who would want to miss out on an opportunity to represent your country in one of the largest, if not the largest events in the world?
From the very first audition (when you made Ira Losco cry), you were seen as a favourite for most viewers (in Malta and abroad). Did you feel like it? Did that add up some pressure on your shoulders?
I was very happy that my audition was liked by a lot of people including our legendary singer and X Factor Malta Judge, Ira Losco! That didn’t add any pressure at all. Every time I performed I gave my 100%, being in front of the Judges, audience and people watching at home.
A lot of people were expecting some traditional Maltese ballad for you to perform on Eurovision stage, and you’ve surprised us all with “Chameleon”, a rather unique and modern track. Were you involved in the selection of the song? How was “Chameleon” chosen?
Of course! I was involved in the selection of Chameleon. The song was chosen from a process that included a number of songs submitted by both local and international composers.
The music video (directed by 2019 Eurostar Award winner Gordon Bonello) has had a great impact, totalizing an impressive number of views so far. How fun was it to shoot this video?
Gordon Bonello is one talented man and in Malta we should be proud to have people like him working with us. The video shoot was Extremely fun! It was my first ever video and I don’t think it could have turned out any better.
The next step now, that a lot of fans have been waiting for, is the first live performance of “Chameleon”. When will this happen?
I will perform my songs during two events in Malta and Gozo right before I go to Tel-Aviv in May.
What are you expectations and fears for Tel Aviv? How do you get ready for the big event?
I am extremely excited for Tel Aviv in May. Preparing for it includes rehearsing and planning. My team and I want to make sure that those three minutes on stage are an experience both to the people present in the arena and those who will be watching me in the comfort of their home.
Do you already have a clear vision of the staging? Can we have a hint of what to expect?
Secrets must be kept. See you during the first rehearsal in Tel Aviv!
