Malta 2016: MESC dress rehearsal review live from MCC
Fotis Konstantopoulos (Greece)
MALTA – The team of oikotimes.com is at the MCC in Malta covering the dress rehearsal for MESC 2016 semifinal. The show begins with Amber singing her 2015 Eurovision entry in a totally new look with shorter hair and a black dress. Ben Camille then welcomes us all and introduces the jury and the first set of songs.
Ira Losco – Chameleon (Invincible)
In a white dress Ira Losco gives her first performance on stage. The song is powerful inside MCC but I doubt it could be sounded like that on TV but the tune seems very strong. Great opening for the show. The song is pop uptempo but for me something is missing to make it the fittest for Stockholm.
Corazón – Falling Glass
With a not very likeable dress in white colour the singer is performing a song that you may like it to see in the TV show tomorrow night but surely not in Stockholm.
Stefan Galea – Light Up My Life
Stefan is performing a very modern pop dance song with two female dances aside him and two female vocalists and a one more guy on the other side of the stage no sure why he is even there. Stefan who’s very cute is giving a very good vocal performance but maybe due to the monotonous tune, I am kinda bored. He is a very good singer though.
Domenique Azzopardi – Empty Hearted
With a full body outfit in dark red with golden belt Domenique is giving a powerful vocal performance for her song entry. She is solo on stage somehow she is turning too much in front something that seems a little bit awkward. Personally I wouldn’t mind this song to win but I am impressed more by the voice rather than the tune.
Dario – I Love You
Dario is next on stage and he is accompanied by four female vocalists and a male backing vocalist. The performance is trying to be kinda sexy and erotic but the very bad vocals of Dario the entire entry is dreadful to even listen to it. Since this is the jury rehearsal I doubt this song can even make it to the final.
Daniel Testa – Under the Sun
Daniel is accompanied by four dancers on stage and they give a nice dance act. Daniel could have been more confident in his vocal performance but maybe the sound is not good in the studio as I don’t hear his voice. The overall performance is good but I am not going to remember it int he end of the evening.
Jessika – The Flame
Now that’s a dress: Jessika is white sparkling gown with her reddish hair is a totally retro diva on stage. Mystic and ambient the tune is something I would love to hear in a Eurovision Song Contest. I would call it the mermaid song. Something is not right in the vocal though as there are too many high and low notes combined at the same time. Overall I think I wanna see this song in the final (maybe a little better make up for Jessika).
Jasmine Abela – Alive
If you are able to forgive the unforgivable outfit of Jasmine and if you also forgive the totally unstructured tune of her song, you will be impressed by the powerful vocals. Unfortunately Jasmine and her two male dancers are doomed due to the song. Shame as Jasmine is a stunning girl!
Raquel – Flashing Lights
Seriously dear? are you gonna wear this in Stockholm too? Oh damn you already lost my vote. Female dancers, female drummer and two male guitar players. Weird and peculiar vocal performance kinda alternative but definitely not in my taste.
Brooke – Golden
Hmm we have something interesting here. Brooke is dressed in black outfit with a huge golden piece in the area of her neck. The backdrops show faces at the beginning of the song. Brooke is a stunning female and her vocals are strong and confident. The song would have been 100% perfect but I have some doubts about the production of it. One of the songs that I really enjoyed today.
Kim – Lighthouse
The guitar is Kim’s lucky charm and with her magical bluish dress she performance alone on stage with some prop light boxes. Simple tune, amazing vocals and a song that I would definitely not mind seeing it in a Eurovision Song Contest. Somehow and in a very vague way it reminds me of the good old days of Hungary 1994 entry. Impressive although extremely simple.
Sarah Crystal – Right Here With You
Sarah is performing on a stage prop accompanied by a dance act by two dancers. Definitely we don’t understand the point of both the dance act and the prop use. After watching the performance I have the impression that I heard two songs: a song by the vocal performance of Sarah and a song while listening just the tune. Confused and haven’t understand anything about this song and performance.
Danica – Frontline
The performance and the camera work reminds me the Dutch entry of 2014 Eurovision Song Contest at opening of the song. Danica Muscat is giving a very powerful vocal performance in hew short black outfit. With american deser background the rock mid tempo song is looking and sounding very interesting. The third interesting song during this rehearsal. Nice music proposal and tune for Eurovision.
Christabelle – Kingdom
One more interesting tune tonight. The song is powerful and combines many styles of music at the same time in a very unique way. Christabelle is accompanied by four female dancers somehow unnecessary in my opinion but the vocal performance and her excellent English accent are impressing me. She plays nicely with the cameras all over her performance and her smile is a real charm. Not sure for the outfit (but then again almost all female singers are dressed in he worst possible way).
Franklin – Little Love
Franklin’s voice is very peculiar but no matter what is great and powerful. The ballad is totally impressing me and I barely can write while listening as I wanna see more and more of the performance. The song is simple, powerful and effective. I wouldn’t mind at all seeing it in Eurovision to be honest. I definitely see him in the final on Saturday.
Dominic – Fire Burn
Dominic and his 4 male queens are taking the stage by storm in a somehow weird dance act. By the way they are all dressed in the outfit. Powerful dance act, not sure for the vocal performance as it sounds a bit harsh in my ears. But would be perfect for Malta’s Gay Pride!
Ira Losco – That’s Why I Love You
Impressive, stunning and awesome. Ira Losco’s second bid is the best tonight and I already would love to declare her as the winner. The stage presentation is exactly how a song in 2016 should be. A modern dressed band accompany her and Ira is wearing a sexy red dress. The tune is amazing, melancholic, rock and powerful at the same time. Congratulations!
Laurence Gray – You’re Beautiful
Classical performance for Laurence. He is in the middle on the stage having aside (left and right) two female viola and violin female players with two more female violin player coming on stage to accompany him. Great vocal performance but too much given on the stage performance. The tune is quite old-fashioned and I am not sure it can convince the European audience in case of getting the Eurovision ticket.
Maxine – Young Love
wow! a vintage song by Maxine with a total sixties presentation. Muriel Day (Ireland 1969) would be so proud to see this. The song is definitely not original but I love it. Very impressive vocal performance – I am still trying to find out where the song is copied – but I am charmed with the amazing eyes of Maxine. Very interesting act.
Deborah C – All Around the World
I don’t understand the tune, I don’t understand the meaning of the dance act and I am just seeing Deborah having a catwalk on stage back and forth for what reason exactly? There is a saxophone player and a DJ. Confused and not impressed by anything, neither voice nor stage presentation.
So folks, that’s it for tonight. Tomorrow there will be the semifinal in which tele voting will be added as the 7th jury vote and we will know the 14 qualifiers for the final. I cannot make accurate predictions at the moment but for sure we will have better review during the live show. Stick to oikotimes.com for more updates from MESC 2016.
