LIVE: FRANCE DECIDES 2014
PARIS, FRANCE – Soyez les bienvenus à la finale française ! The French final is about to start, in a special edition of Natasha St-Pier’s show « les Chansons D’abord » (Songs First). The show usually consists in a tribute to famous French songs. French commentator Cyril Feraud is also a guest of the show.
A band of 5 singers (Sonia Lacen, Lisa Angell, Flo Malley, Michaël Lelong, Camille Lou) perform the songs that were hits on the very same week 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years ago. But today it’s a Eurovision special with guests such as Marie Myriam (London 1977, last French winner to date), Amaury Vassili (Dusseldorf 2011) and Anggun (Baku 2012) so we can expect many achives videos and former songs from our favorite contest. The show isn’t live, but was recorded on December 10th.
The 3 songs that are bidding for a ticket to Copenhagen will be premiered today, and a 4 week long vote procedure will start right after the show. On March 2nd, on the very same show, the names of the jury members as well as the final outcome of the competition will be revealed.
HOW TO WATCH
16:40 CET – FRANCE DECIDES 2014 – SONGS FIRST
France 3 (regional) watch online (regional)
The show is starting. Natasha is welcoming the audience along with her 5 singers. The first song to be performed by the band and our host is “L’Oiseau Et L’Enfant” (The bird and the child) the last French winning entry (1977). The three guests of the show are now welcome: Marie Myriam (1977), Amaury Vassily (2011) and Anggun (2012). So we have 4 former French entrants on the couch, as Natasha was the French bidder in Copenhagen in 2001. A recap of the famous French singers who took part to the contest (for France or other francophone countries) is now shown. Natasha is explaining the voting procedure as the 3 songs are about to be performed. No mention of a possible internet voting though…
DESTAN – SANS TOI (WITHOUT YOU) WATCH HERE
The boy band, or a One Direction copycat to be honest, is performing their bilingual pop entry. The staging is quite simple and the audience seems to appreciate the performance. As they are clapping to the music. The voices are not bad and the boys are doing the job in quite a good way. The song is a pop ballad that could have been performed at Eurovision years ago. During their interview, Destan’s boys definitely sound like excited teenagers!
JOANNA LAGRAVE – MA LIBERTÉ (MY FREEDOM) WATCH HERE
A typical beautiful French ballad (though written by Maltese composers) for Joanna. The lady is alone on stage and is giving a spotless performance. Some will call this a powerful ballad, others will call it boring. The music, the voice and the melody are nice, but this song sounds a bit too slow… Nice reactions in the audience.
TWINTWIN – MOUSTACHE WATCH HERE
That’s definitely something different! The three boys are on stage with dancers. Don’t ask what type of song this one is. It’s impossible to describe but it’s… fun and entertaining. The audience seems to like this one. Note sure the international audience would get this joke though.
Amaury is on stage to perform his Eurovision entry “Sognu”. Natasha’s band sings the most famous francophone winning entries: “Poupée De Cire, Poupée De Son” (Luxembourg 1965), ‘Si La Vie Est Cadeau” (Luxembourg 1983), “J’Aime La Vie” (Belgium 1986), “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi” (Switzerland 1988). We also see a video about famous international hits from the contest (ABBA, Dana International, Gali Atari and Milk & Honey, Brotherhood of Man, Teach-in).
The typical video about the oddest choreographies and outfit is shown. Let’s remember that Eurovision is famous in France for those two particularities… A medley of French Eurovision songs from different decade is performed by the members of the band: “Elle Etait Si Jolie” (She was so beautiful) -1963, “N’Avoue Jamais” (Never admit) -1965, “Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue” (A Bench, a tree, a street)-1971 (which actually was a Monegasque winner), “White And Black Blues” -1990, “Mama Corsica”-1993 (performed in a duo with Amaury).
Anggun is performing “Echo, You And I”. This song definitely looks better without the gymnasts (remember Baku…). After a recap of the 3 bidding songs, Natasha is introducing the man who will fly with her to Copenhagen to comment the final, Cyril Féraud. He has already been the French commentator in Baku and Malmö. He is taking advantage of the situation asking Natasha to perform her 2001 entry ‘Je N’Ai Que Mon Âme” (All I have is my soul), one of the nicest French entries ever.
We have the choice this year but don’t need to be a fortune teller to guess that teenage girld will vote for Destan, fans in the 30’s or 40’s will go for TWINTWIN and all the others will vote for Joanna. The key of the outcome is not the quality of the songs but how much they will campaign on social networks…
