THE BEST SONGS
Nuteki – Fly Away: is an interesting rock tune which could work as an alternative entry for Belarus, it might be too Belarusian for the European audience but still it’s interesting and different. Dariia – Starlight: finally an interesting song, Dariia’s performance is very impressive and the song is catchy, easy to remember and no matter the negative static performance the 80s style song could work for Belarus this year and would like to keep this entry instead of changing it. Elena Sinyavskaya – Via Lattea: very interesting tune too operatic at some points but this tune is definitely reminding me something. What I don’t like is the singer she seems not fit for this song. Opera with electro pop in an average combination. Not the worst song but something is wrong with this one although the effort is descent.
Alina Moshchenko – Angel Crying: static performance in a white dress for Alina with four backing singers aside towards the centre of the stage. Interesting ballad and a very beautiful singer for Belarus. Now I think we have a favourite with a good voice to win this selection. Zhanet – You Will Be Here: a Swedish made song by Ylva and Lynda Persson which sounds very good and a ballad that can make a difference on a Eurovision stage. Definitely a favourite and hope Belarusian audience and jury appreciate it. Perfect trick with the dress and the hidden dancers, well done! Wouldn’t be interesting to see Swedish-Belarus collaborating for Eurovision when they even stopped their diplomatic relations last year?
Switter Boys – Eternal Love: interesting and somehow I dislike it so much which makes me loving it. Don’t ask me why. It’s kitsch, it’s modern, it;s different, it’s unique and I wouldn’t mind see it in on a Eurovision stage. It’s definitely a dance song for the Euroclub.
THE WORST SONGS
The first song of the evening, Natalia Tamelo – Not What I’ve Been Looking For: a totally indifferent song with an old fashion sound and dramatic outfit for the singer. Vocally not bad but the jazz version of this song is simply not for Eurovision at all. Artem Mikhalenko – Rhapsody Number 1: this one got big applause at the opening of the song. Too operatic although the music structure is quite interesting with electric elements in it. Not suitable for Eurovision though. Matvej Cooper & Group DUX – Strippers: one of the weirdest songs someone could hear in a Eurovision selection, the structure sounds messy but it’s unique and somehow it’s surrealistic. Not my cup of tea though, would never vote for it.
TEO – Cheesecake: very theatrical and artistic with interesting lyric reference to Hillywood movie stars but the latin jazz song would never work in a Eurovision. The singer is not bad but the song is not enough to convince me he is suitable for Eurovision 2014. Anastacia Maleshkevich – Runaway: sorry but the staging of this song is dreadful and kitsch. It is a ballad like the previous one, it has an outfit change like the previous one but this is definitely worst and it will suffer from comparison with Zanet’s entry. It’s a song that I would listen in Maltese selection. Napoli – Stay With Me: weird opening of a song that turns into a ballad. It reminds me past Eurovision efforts of Belarus in Eurovision but the song although not bad is nothing special and not memorable. I can’t hardly find a song that can replace this one for the Belarusian trio of Napoli group. Vocally is OK but overall I wouldn’t want this to win.
Max Lawrence & DiDjuLja – Now You’re Gone: interesting instrument opening with a ballet act but the song is nothing special. Too indifferent and definitely not memorable. Not a winner for sure. Tasha Odi – Empty Universe: the last song of the night and is an interesting ballad performed with an artistic stage presentation. Not strong enough to win although the vocals are great and the 80s style could do it but the singer is not powerful enough to support it in my opinion.
