KDAM 2013: MORAN MAZOR – RAK BISHVILO
Tonight, Israel chooses its representative for the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. The winner, which will be selected from ten acts, will be chosen based on a combined jury and televote. The show starts and is opened by the Israeli representatives at the 2012 Junior Eurovision Song Contest – Kids.IL. Soon after Orna Datz, our host, sings the country’s 1979 winning entry “Hallelujah” . Other Israeli Eurovision hits are also being sung. The jury is now being introduced.
“Hayom” by Judah Gavra
This is a nice entry and the vocals tonight are good. The audience in the studio likes it as well and is clapping and jumping around during the performance. Perhaps the brake dancers are unnecessary though this is only a national final performance. The English part of the song is also sung well. Judah is joined on stage by five backing dancers/singers and they all do a dance routine.
“Ten li siman” by Moran Mazoz
After a dance track it is time for a ballad. The vocals here are excellent. Moran is joined on stage by a harp player and three backing singers. Moran hits all the high notes just right and there are massive applauses throughout the performance, deservedly.
“Love Is One” by Ron Weinreich
This is an ethno flavoured song which has a catchy rhythm and main chorus. However, after the previous performance by Moran, this song seems kind of weak. While I’m a big fan of countries sending their entries in their native language, this song just sounds better in English. Nevertheless, he is the favourite.
“Forever” by Shany Zamir
Another up tempo song sung in both English and Hebrew. This is well sung and, if chosen, would follow the trend of other countries this year of selecting up tempo “Euphoria” style songs. Overall, it is a good performance. Shany is joined by four backing dancers and they have a dance routine worked out.
“Beautiful” Hila Ben David
Hila is wearing a flowing black dress. Once again, like with most performances up until now, the vocals are excellent. “Beautiful” is a slow paced ballad. However, the song could easily be forgotten in a sea of songs at Eurovision, and perhaps tonight. We are at the halfway point and the hosts return to the stage and head to greenroom.
“Find a Way” by Ran Sandler
Good singing here again. The ballad is entirely in English. The female backing vocalists works well here. The audience seems to like it.
“Toda La Noche” by Meital De Razon & Asi Tal
The song starts off with Balkan style trumpet playing. Meital is wearing golden pants and a golden vest. While this is a dance song to me it is somewhat weak. The vocals aren’t perfect either.
“Rak bishvilo” By Moran Mazor
Interesting styling by Moran, with huge glasses and a long black dress with sleeves. Technically the song is excellent: the vocals are perfect, Moran doesn’t miss a note and the audience award her with an applause midway through the performance. One of the best ballads (and songs) of the night.
“We Are Free” by Vladi Blayberg
This is in stark contrast to the previous song. It is an up tempo song with lots of dancing, though Vladi just looks awkward as he does his dance moves. To me, this song is quite weak and the vocals are not top notch either. This would probably get lost at Eurovision, especially in a year full of dance tracks.
“We Are One” by Nicki Goldstein
It’s the final performance of the night. The vocals are a bit off at the start but Nicki gets more confident as the song continues. It develops into a nice power ballad though I have a feeling I’ve already heard a handful of similar entries tonight. Nicki is accompanied by a band on stage and is wearing a leather jacket.
Time for a recap and a chat with the judges. The interval act now begins, with singing being on the menu. The interval acts, mixed with several ad breaks, are now dragging on a bit. The judges now begin giving their scores. Ron Weinreich and Moran Mazor are the jury favourites and are now neck and neck. The telvotes are now coming in. The winner of Kdam 2013 and the Israeli representative at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest is Moran Mazor with the song “Rak bishvilo” (Just for Him). Congratulations! That completes tonight’s live report.
