ISRAEL – During the red carpet of Israel Calling 2018, oikotimes.com had a chat with one of the hot favourites (and hot participants in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest), Mikolas Josef from Czech Republic. The interview focused on the backpack which he uses in all of his performances. It seems that this accessory will be used also in Lisbon as Mikolas says that there is something in it (most likely) which might reveal it during his performance in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest.
Mikolas Josef is currently between second and third place in the betting odds overall tables as Czech Republic managed to enter the spotlight of Europe after a series of failures in the Eurovision Song Contest since the country debuted in the contest.
The Czech Republic has participated at the Eurovision Song Contest six times since making its debut in 2007. After receiving nul points in the semi-final of the 2009 Contest and a lack of interest from the Czech public, the Czech broadcaster ČT decided to withdraw from future contests. ČT announced their return to the contest in 2015, with an internal selection being used to select their fourth Eurovision entry. In 2016, Gabriela Gunčíková became the first (and to date) only Czech Republic entrant to reach the final, finishing 25th with the song “I Stand”.
Josef was born on 4 October 1995 in Prague to a musical family. His parents are both English teachers and he graduated from the English College in Prague. He has a brother named Karel, and has been playing guitar since he was five years old. Josef is half-Moravian and grew up in a small village in central Bohemia. He later went on to graduate from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art as a drama student. At age 17, he began modeling professionally and took part in fashion shows for clothing brands such as Diesel and Prada. However, he later left modeling due to the perceived dishonesty and superficiality within the industry.
After ending his modeling career, Josef decided to begin pursuing music professionally. He worked as a street performer and folk guitarist in several European cities such as Oslo, Zürich, Hamburg, and Vienna. He independently released his debut single “Hands Bloody” in 2015. The following year, he released the single “Free”, which became a top twenty hit in the Czech Republic. That same year, he also released the single “Believe (Hey Hey)”.
Josef was approached to represent the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song “My Turn”, but rejected the offer as he did not believe the song suited him. In 2017, Josef released the single “Lie to Me”. He later confirmed that the song would compete in the Czech national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon. “Lie to Me” later won the national selection, and will now represent the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. In April 2018, he signed an international deal with Sony Music and RCA Records.
His Israel Calling 2018 performance is fairly said as one of the best on April 10th at Rabin Square. Not only performed but interacted the most with the audience getting down of the stage and greeting the fans. Her knows how to play the game of publicity and he is always approachable and the Czech delegation left the best impressions to the Israel 2018 hosts with their kindness and modesty despite they know that they are hot favourites.
