ISRAEL 2014: HAS IBA ALREADY DECIDED?
JERUSALEM, ISRAEL – This morning on the israelhayom.co.il website sources close to the singer declared that Mei Finegold was chosen by IBA to wave the Israeli flag in Copenhagen. The 31 year-old singer, was internally selected by IBA and was preferred to Maya Buscaglia and Chen Aharoni.
A few obstacles may resist to this nomination though. The main one is that Mei did not serve in the army. That may seem odd, but in the past, singers like Maya Buskila or Marina Blumin were not selected by IBA for this reason. The subject of military service is not something secondary in Israel.
Yesterday evening, the IBA selection committee held a meeting and has chosen its entrant. A definitive participation will happen when the contract between the singer and IBA is signed.
This choice can be surprising as Mei isn’t a pop singer and has never expressed any special interest in representing Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest, unlike Maya Buscaglia who is a very motivated candidate almost every year and has failed once again.
A national final should be held soon, and the public will have the opportunity to choose the best song among those that Mei will perform.
Mei Finegold from Risho-LeZion, is rather popular in her home country since, in 2009, she finished 3rd in the seventh edition of Kokhav Nolad (the local version of the American idol show) despite being the hot favourite. Since then she’s been working hard. She took part to the ”Silent Night” musical (a show based on popular Shlomo Atzi’s songs)in 2012, and was even nominated for Best Supporting Actress. She was also a member of several bands, like “Limousine Express”.
At the moment she’s playing in the “Kazablan” musical, at the Cameri Theatre in Tel Aviv.
Let’s wish Mei, ! טוב מזל
