Icelandic singer Hera Björk, who represented Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo in 2010, won the highest award of the Viña del Mar song contest in Chile yesterday, her entry ‘Because You Can’ being named Best Song. “It’s marvelous for me and a recognition that I should continue to make music and release it,” Hera said at a press conference after the win, visir.is reports.
She will perform again tonight on live television with 100 million viewers watching and for the first time without a jury. Hera is planning to expand into the Hispanic market. “‘Because You Can’ already exists in Spanish and we’re working on other songs that will be released in Spanish in the coming months.” The song was performed in English at the competition but has been played extensively in Spanish on local radio stations recently.
Hera will return to Iceland on Sunday night. “These have been an incredible two weeks but the work is just beginning; I have to take advantage of this opportunity. It’s not enough to bring the seagull home,” the singer said in reference to her trophy. Hera stated that Viña del Mar is huge in Latin America and is the competition that put global superstar Shakira on the map.
