GREECE – Shortly before leaving for Tel Aviv, where she will represent Greece in the Eurovision 2019 competition with Better Love, Katerina Duska talks all about the show Happiness and Themis Mallis. How was the proposal made? How long did she get her to answer? Her appearance in Amsterdam was disappointing. Her goal at Eurovision 2019. The answer to Roger Waters. Katerina Duska left nothing unanswered …
“The proposal for Eurovision was made without any expectation from Mr. Papadimitriou. At the end of November he told me to come up with a professional proposal and I imagined it would have to do with the House of Arts and Letters, with a Christmas concert, I did not know that he had taken this position this year. And that’s how the Eurovision theme came. We were eating and trying to figure out why the subject of conversation went on to Eurovision and the first thing I asked him was “Why me?” I do not think that I am a conventional choice for Greece. I am active in a venue that has never represented Greece in the competition. It took me a month to say “Yes”. They told me from the beginning that we want you to go with your own song. I wanted to know whether I can choose my associates and whether I can have them with me to feel that security is needed.
I have been accustomed to working with the least means, to rely on my voice and my musicians. It will be a spectacular show all this thing, with our costumes, with our dancers … these are new things but it is also the natural evolution. It is something you want and at some point it will come the next step.
I have no courage at this time to watch my appearance. If you succeeded me out before all this, you would hardly see me go out in bulk or unpainted and now I do it almost continuously, it’s too funny.
It is a unique experience, crazy “doping” to listen to the people from below to sing Better Love. You see kids waiting outside the hotel and be there for four days in a row. There is not that, terrible love. On the other hand, people must know that these parties are totally amateur. Our sound rehearsals are non-existent, the infrastructures are non-existent, volunteers are those organizing these parties. We are not at all indicative of our appearances. It is so unfair. But on the other hand, everyone will show their value on the stage. The artist shows how many times he gets up and not how much he falls. The live in Amsterdam was the worst I’ve ever lived in my music career so far. Of course, I have not gone better in such a bad appearance because of this world. We were people, it was a bad moment, then came a much better moment in Madrid and there will be another better moment in Tel Aviv.
Of course I want to go to the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 and I do not want to believe that I will not pass. No one can believe that. You have to believe that you are going to win, otherwise you will never be doing well. It is a brain and mental process that every artist has to do. The goal is always to give your best. If I give my best self and believe what I have done to represent me, if for whatever reason I do not like, I will not be saddened.
For me, Roger Waters is one of my music idols. It is not a matter that I first heard. I respect everyone’s point of view. For me it is a contest, which is very beautiful. I do not feel like I’m going to talk about the actions of any government. It’s a huge issue that has not been resolved for so many decades. I go to a music contest with a song that has a very strong message and I believe in the strength of music.”
