GPT THE TEMP NATIONAL BROADCASTER
A transitional channel being called Greek Public Television began transmitting its logo on the ERT state broadcaster frequency on Wednesday morning, with plans to show films and documentaries until the launch of the new broadcaster, NERIT.
Deputy Culture Minister Pantelis Kapsis said that the interim station will begin program broadcasting “in the next few hours.”
The launch of Greek Public Television prompted an angry reaction from ERT workers who lost their jobs after Prime Minister Antonis Samaras last month decided to pull the plug on the public broadcaster as it undergoes restructuring.
Parliament is to debate through Thursday new legislation for NERIT (New Greek Radio, Internet and Television), after Greece’s coalition parties, New Democracy and PASOK, backed the bill in principle on Tuesday night.
European Broadcasting Union representatives will be in Athens on July 17 to discuss with the government the process of the new national television. In the meantime the former ERT employees remain at the headquarters airing their own program on the web.
