In what is becoming a familiar event, Spanish national broadcaster, TVE is facing a clash between the Eurovision Song Contest and the annual final of the Spanish football cup final; the Copa del Rey. TVE has had the broadcasting rights for both in the last few years and they provide the focal point of their viewing figures.
With this problem in mind, TVE has asked the Football federation to change the date for the final so that it will not clash, the date itself is not a”fixed”, so a change could be possible but if not, then TVE may end up showing the Eurovision Song Contest on its second channel.
Eurovision on TVE has brought in good viewer numbers, in 2012 the final was watched by 6.500.000 viewers but the Copa del Rey final also brought in 7.726.000 viewers last year, so both events are priorities for the channel. Previously, TVE has pulled out of showing the Eurovision semifinals at the last minute, last year was such an example and fans have petitioned for it to not be repeated this year.
However given that a football friendly was also scheduled last year on the same night as the Eurovision final and had to be moved to an earlier time, it’s clear that preparations are not made in advance.
TVE have also confirmed that there will be a special gala to choose the song that El Sueño de Morfeo will perform in Malmö, a date for this has not yet been set.
