EXCLUSIVE: THE TWIN TWIN INTERVIEW
Olivier Rocher (France)
PARIS, FRANCE – The French national final will be broadcast on January 26th and results will be revealed on March 2nd, but the 3 finalists are already actively campaigning on the Internet. After Joanna, a second bidder, the band TWIN TWIN was kind enough to give us an exclusive interview and answer our questions. For sure, those guys just wanna have fun!
Hi guys! Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and your background?
Hi Olivier! Of course we can! The band is composed of twin brothers Lorent Idir (singer, lyricist and composer) and François Djemel (bass player, programmer and composer) along with Patrick Biyik (beatbox, guitar and drums)
The twin brothers come from Montreuil, and I come from Villeparisi. The band was created “by chance”. We would often meet at the same concerts, in the audience. We then started to work together on movie soundtracks projects. At that period, Patrick was looking for roommates, and the brothers had a large house in Montreuil. That’s how it all started.
When we started we did not have a precise goal in mind except playing music in a fun and original way. We decided to make things simple: bass, guitar, beatbox and programming, that is to say a mix between music of the 80’s and the 90’s. Our music style can be called “a crossover” between electro, hip hop and rock music (influenced by famous French bands like Béruriers Noirs, NTM, Afrika Bambata, Kraftwerk…)
Our first album was entitled “Vive La Vie” (Long Live Life) as a tribute to the very first track we had written together, but also as the motto for the band and our leitmotiv for everyday life. One must never give up since life is always full of surprises. After 3 years of existence, we’ve done 220 concerts all over France and abroad, and we’ve played the first part of famous artists such as Stromae, Shaka Ponk, Philippe Katerine, Nina Hagen, Soprano, Catherine Ringer to name a few…
What were your motivations for bidding to the French selection show for Eurovision 2014?
As it’s the first time in years there is such a selection in France, and since the public will decide who will be sent to Copenhagen, we’ve thought it was a very cool idea ! We’re feeling like we want to change the French opinion about the contest, and make people watch this prestigious event. We dared to think “Why not doing it? Why not us?». We talked about the idea with our team and we all agreed. We sent “Moustache” to FranceTelevisions’ jury and we got selected!
What is your connection with the Eurovision Song Contest?
Our music label, Warner Music told us about Eurovision.
Did you watch the Malmö 2013 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest? If so, what was your opinion?
Yes we did. From an artistic point of view, there were good and less good performances… but, as far as the show is concerned, it was incredible! That definitely is a BIG event!
How did you react when you were told you were among the three finalists for France?
We felt like in Pharell Williams’ last track: HAPPY!!!!
Can you tell us a bit more about your song? Have you already thought about the staging of your performance?
As you already know, our song is called “Moustache”. It deals with the story of a man who has everything he has ever wanted but is not satisfied. What he really wants is… a moustache! It’s a metaphor about the consumers society we are living in, with this permanent and ridiculous dissatisfaction feeling. As far as the staging of the performance is concerned, we can’t say anything as we don’t want to spoil our surprise to oikotimes.com readers!
Do you know the 2 other finalists, Destan and Joanna?
We had never heard of them before the jury revealed the names of the finalists!
Are you following the news about Eurovision 2014? Have you ever been to Copenhagen?
Yes we are reading everything there is to read on Twitter or Facebook. Via the social networks, people talk to us, so we follow it as closely as possible. But there are 36 countries, it’s huge, and it’s sometimes difficult to be aware of all the news. None of us has ever been to Copenhagen. It’s gonna be party time over there if we’re chosen by the French public!
Do you have a favourite Eurovision song?
Marie Myriam’s “L’Oiseau Et L’Enfant” is a wonderful song. More recently, “Euphoria” by Loreen in 2012 was like a slap in our faces!
What would TWIN TWIN like to say to French Eurovision fans, and to oikotimes.com readers?
Hello oikotimes readers! We wish you a Happy 2014! Please vote for us so that we can head to Copenhagen! You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and even become a member of the TWINTWIN family. OIKOTIMES! TWINTWIN! OH YEAH !
Merci beaucoup les garçons!
