EXCLUSIVE: TEO SPEAKS TO OIKOTIMES.COM
MINSK, BELARUS – The team of oikotimes.com is honoured with the first web interview of Teo (Yuri Vashchuk) the winner of Belarusian national final 2014 and his country’s representative in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song “Cheesecake”. Here is what we found out about his and his Eurovision plans.
First of all congratulation TEO. You’re the one who will wave the Belarus flag in Copenhagen. What was your first reaction and thought when you were declared the winner?
Thank you very much Fotis! What about my emotions… well I can hardly describe it. It was something new for me what I didn’t expect. Like a mix of happiness and shock!
Can you tell us a bit more about your history, your background?
I am not a new one singer in this business. I work as a music writer also do arrangements for my colleagues’ songs , work with many belarussian singers. Also I am a TV presenter. Have a special folk programme on TV Channel Belarus 3 and Belarus 24 “Back to the past”. But my main job is – singer of Belarussian National Academic Orchestra.
How did your decision to take part to Belarussian final occur?
I didn’t plan to take part in this project. Besides I did the arrangement of Natalia Tamelo’s song for national selection. And wrote the song for one more participant – Tasha Odi. So… I was involved in this event. But there were a lot of PR around the project and 2 days before the deadline I wrote this track and sent it. When jury selected my song and I became one of 15 finalists I decided to produce light video describing my song. All was made so easy and feeling these easy emotions I appeared on stage first of all to get fun! I didn’t expect that I win but I did!
Your Robin Thicke influence is quite obvious, but do you have other sources of inspiration?
I listen to all types of music. First of all because I do arrangements of songs and have to know all trends.
Last year, Alyona was asked to change song. Do you think “Cheesecake” is the actual entry for the Eurovision Song Contest?
No I am not going to change the song. First of all because I feel myself very comfortable in this song . I don’t play game or role. I am true and I really live a small life in this song.
What is your connection with the Eurovision Song Contest? Did you follow the Malmö edition? What did you think?
Sure I watch the contest every year and last year was not an exception. I liked it very much!
Do you think there were better songs than yours? If you weren’t participate which one would you like to win last night?
It is a very difficult question… well it seems like I am a diplomat but I really think all songs were good and performances bright. Besides we are colleagues and friends. But as usually there are only one winner. This time I won!
Belarus hasn’t win Eurovision ever since 2004. What do you think is the reason for it?
There in no any recipe to win this contest. It depends on many factors. So maybe Belarus didn’t have all of them. But in 2014 I will do my best and hope we will manage!
Дзякуй, Спасибо TEO! We wish you and Belarus all the best for Copenhagen.
