INFEUSA REPORTS – 2016 has been our year. We finally achieved a major goal. The goal to watch the Eurovision Song Contest live. LogoTV bought the rights to air the show live with reality TV stars Carson Kressley and Michelle Collins as commentators for the Grand Final. It was known in advance that LogoTV will air only the Finals on Saturday. Even our own Justin Timberlake was invited to perform during the Interval act during the Grand Final.
In the past years, YouTube and Eurovision.tv was our source to watch the full show live. Unknown to us-this year was completely different. YouTube and Eurovision.tv were blocked in the US and is still being blocked due to the music rights. Since Logo signed up, all rights were given to them. Every other country in the world can stream Eurovision on the Eurovision.tv website or even watch the past events of the Grand Final, but unfortunately for us, those are still blocked.
Grand Final- Expectations were high and the excitement at it’s peak. As we tuned in to watch the show live our commentators came on. It was a disaster. Our commentators know very little to nothing about the contest and created a mockery out of it. They forget that this is an actual competition and these artists take pride in representing their countries. Carson Kressley would not stop talking. No one cares who you find cute and who’d you date. Not every fan of the Eurovision Song Contest is gay. It was very annoying how unattached the whole thing felt. Many fans tuned out. Most were in fact….annoyed. Of course LogoTV was proud for having a decent amount of viewers. That’s because all of us tuned in to watch but only lasted a few minutes until we all had to find other means of streaming. The commentators weren’t the only problem, the Interval act for the Grand Final with Justin Timberlake was also blocked. Our one proud moment for us to see the US in the stage was taken due to the rights issue. Even Carson said to the viewers that its blocked and “go watch it on YouTube later”. ummm it’s blocked Carson…
During the Finals, we were overwhelmed by the amount of messages from fans requesting an alternate way to watch the contest. Luckily our host were transmitting the whole contest live and with no interruptions whatsoever. Links were quickly posted (SVTplay.se) and tried to reach out to everyone. We were very happy being able to watch full contest live. The even had the SVTplay app for your phone in case that you wanted to watch it on your smartphone. The stream was free and of course other broadcasters from different countries were also transmitting the contest live online.
Though the contest is over, Eurovision.tv and their YouTube page is still blocked in our country. So much so that there is a petition towards EBU and LogoTV to have the ban lifted.
