ISRAEL – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded on Thursday to the decision made by the European Broadcasting Union that next year’s competition will be hosted in the coastal city of Tel Aviv.
“We are blessed with a Eurovision in Israel,” Netanyahu said in a PMO statement. “It will be in Tel Aviv and it shall be an excellent Eurovision. Tel Aviv is an international city, a vibrant city, and the entire world will see that,” said Netanyahu.
The decision was made after several weeks of speculation regarding the two finalists to host, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Some believed Tel Aviv more suitable for the event than the capital, fearing international controversy and arguments over Shabbat.
On Thursday, the Broadcasting Union made its decision and elected Tel Aviv.
