EDITORIAL – The 64th Eurovision Song Contest is history and already western planning the Dutch adventure. But what happened this year? This post contains my personal remarks (obviously not embraced by the entire team) and aim not to offend anyone. It’s time for me to share some truths about the contest.
It was an excellent and structured show. Many say there were complaints by the delegations. But I admit the organisers hide them very well. The show was flowing and enjoyable. The opening act was amazing in all three shows and the interval acts amazing. Graphics, camera work, lights also stunning. But what made history in Eurovision 2019 was that Israel was the only country who managed to have MADONNA on stage.
It was a failure. although we don’t ahem yet logistic and budget figures of the outcome of the event, it is clear that security incidents, high hotel prices, reduced arrivals by 50%, unsold tickets and inadequate shuttle services don’t leave good impression for the Eurofans in Tel Aviv. The good thing was that the security was not as tight as expected and that the sentiment of security was all over the city as no one really worried that something might happen. After all the newly re-elected government made sure to appease the Hamas and cease-fire during Eurovision weeks. Not sure if the activists made the biggest problem in the Opening Ceremony orange carpet but the event was sooooo boring although the idea was quite nice. Portuguese blue carpet remains for me the best. EUroclub and Eurovillage seem to have marked a success as their events were sold out and with much appreciation for the line ups.
MADONNA & INTERVAL ACT
Everyone is laughing and criticising the bad vocal performance of Madonna. She was out of tune and although LIKE A PRAYER was nice in that version, the new song was completely indifferent. The staging for MADONNA was simply too much for nothing as there wasn’t an actual show. The incident with the Palestinian flag was also condemned by the EBU but still Madonna never hided her pro-Palestinian sentiments. Yes, MADONNA is a huge artist and always an asset for any host but her performance last night was complete failure.
The interval act was an excellent idea with four legends switching songs. Mans, Conhita and Verka though were shadowed by Eleni Foureira. Everyone keeps talking about this girl for second year. Last night she was better than MADONNA and shined more than the pop queen. The venue, the press area were shaking from cheers for Eleni which is fairly considered the true winner of Eurovision 2018.
EBU will soon discuss the incident with Hatari who raised Palestinian flags during their screening in the Green Room. We should’ve expected and it’s clear that the Icelandic delegation is completely responsible. But let me do a remark here: we should not have the Palestinian issue as a taboo: Israeli society must get more open on the issue and start discussing it. No matter who’s right or wrong, these two nations have to co-exist. It’s not the end of the world if we start talking about it.
Moldova: TVM must understand that Kalpakidis is not successful composer (but of course it’s his right to submit songs and dream of the best) and despite his bad record the broadcaster trusted him with an old fashioned song, which was presented in. hilariously copied way (Ukraine 2011) and with an attitude by the sand-designer Kseniya who thinks that we would bow every time she draws either in sand or snow. Well guys, the song and the performance were awful don’t complain.
THE ISSUE OF NORWAY
Could Norway have won the contest this year if they got another run in the jury show after submitting to EBU a complaint? Probably yes but Eurofans would not be happy to go to an expensive Oslo. Jon Ola Sand (descending from Norway) obviously didn’t want to show favouritism to Norway but NRK seems to be furious. But it would be interesting to see Saara Aalto’s face now that her 2019 Monsters song won public voting when she failed to even score higher than 2 points in 2018. It is also funny to see a clear plagiarism-case song to rank so high in the public voting. Not to mention their mediocre vocal performance (although in the grand final they were improved at least 90%).
INTERESTING VOTING ISSUES
North Macedonia actually debuted in Eurovision last night as they have new name. This was a reward course as they finally settled their 27 year dispute with Greece but we have to admit Tamara was excellent performer (in the Grand Final had some mishaps but she delivered well). Greek jury gave North Macedonia its first ever point while North Macedonia didn’t give anything to Greece.
Cyprus paid the price of not only copying Fuego but also having a hideous stage presentation. Everyone tried to express that in a more gentle wy of course throughout the rehearsals week. CyBC strategy was to re-apply the same recipe. When did ever that work in Eurovision.
Greece paid the price of the running order. Immediately when the running order announced, seeing Greece after The Netherlands we all immediately said “below 15th position” but we tried not to shout it out because if we have done it then ERT would call us “haters”. Nevertheless it was one of the best entries Greece had the recent years and at least they qualified to the final. Just like Demy, Duska should also forget any plans for a career in Greece, she is doomed.
EBU will logically issue soon an explanation statement of what happened with the votes of the Belarusian jury which was sacked on Saturday afternoon because they revealed their first semi final votes in the local press. But the points given by the EBU as aggregated result approved by the auditors made no sense and actually gave points to countries with zero points.
Another example of FUEGO copy with a DESPASITO copy which worked well though for Luca. He could have been higher in the ranking If the delegation was not that selective and hide him from most of. us
Null points for Germany from the public. We were saying that this will end as a flop: last year with fatherhood, this year with sisterhood, we had enough.
Spanish fans are furious with the voting. Well they should get furious with their broadcaster. The singer was out of tune, the song was nothing special and the stage presentation (sorry Fokas) was a circus without any sense or appeal. TVE must now explain the high spendings and the fact that they cannot find an international tune which can appeal the entire continent. Spanish fans demand withdraw from Eurovision: guys get a life, failures happen. If we give up every time we fail then we are nothing.
Weidly the audience only react negatively when Greece and Cyprus exchange 12 points but never when the obvious nordic, baltic or balkan countries do. Let’s see the obvious voting patterns of exchange 12 points. Also EBU should also check the San Marino jury who favoured Russia, Cyprus and Greece when we all know that the Head of Press (and actual dominatrix f the delegation) was Greek, former ERT employee known for her “skills” in PR
