Eurovision 2018 🇵🇹 First Semi Final analysis of the results: arrogance, over enthusiasm and bets fail
Fotis Konstantopoulos (Greece)
EDITORIAL – So that was the so called hard to get to the Grand Final, first semi final? Seriously? most of the participating acts were dreadful in vocals to say the least. But tonight we all got surprised with the results and I can understand it. But were there reasons why we expected different results?
First of all wee must finally realise that the European audience of the Eurovision Song Contest and the Eurofans are totally two different worlds which cannot interact and the latter cannot influence as much the first.
The arrogance and ignorance of some delegations to listen to advises from objective and calm people lead them to disqualification. I am not happy with it but it’s time to say to some of they “I told you so”. But actually when I was saying it I always received comments such as “you don’t know how this works”. Well… you don’t as well!
Beet failure is amazing. We all keep reporting and reporting based on betting odd changes and here we are. Ireland made it to the final and non one predicted it. You don’t want to understand that with Eastern Europe not allowed to pay and bet and with money the key factor of the bets, you cannot be rely on them. I can give 1000 Euros to San Marino and make it a favourite. But some of you are stubborn. Lesson taught? Nah! next year you will fill again the web with your predictions – some sites justified as they are getting paid by them! (and you know for which one I am talking about).
Over enthusiasm of the fans based on a studio version of the song is another factor we fail to predict the qualifiers. But not, when oikotimes.com went to Israel and said that Belgium struggles to sing live in a simple fan party, then all of you thought we hated Sennek. Now get your disqualification Belgians and go home!
Ireland, Lithuania were for many (not for us) the big surprises. Well you noticed something in their performances? They were simple, effective and good songs. Songs with powerful message delivered in an extravagant way.
Greece, Belgium out: Well I talked already about Belgium but Greece is another thing. Of course Greek delegation will blame RTP for not delivering the optical effect. But Greek media were fair when they said: the stage presentation was simple and indifferent. We all noticed Yianna was unstable in her vocals and not following the camera work especially in her closet ups. ERT should learn a big lesson: When we all shouted Eleni Foureira was the ideal representative for Greece we were right. Now ERT eat her dust!
Cyprus, Israel and Czech Republic still favourites. Well Czech Republic and Cyprus for sure. Israel lost all its dynamics as Netta was not 100% good in vocals and the camera work of RTP was simply awful. How can RTP miss and not emphasise in the oriental part of the song which is the peak of the party spirit of the song? Mikolas soon the other hand is a true hero after his accident and the camera work boosted it a lot. Eleni (although there is too much red and fires which blur the image on screen) delivered great vocals and outstanding choreography.
So guys listen up: stop getting enthusiastic with studio versions of the song, stop looking at the bookies who uses you to form impressions (which ultimately fail) and stop reading paid websites with promotional stories.
Simple as that!
