COPENHAGEN, DENMARK – With “Only Teardrops” Emmelie de Forest put Denmark on the European map and next year the whole of Europe will unite in Copenhagen for the Eurovision Song Contest. This is why the European Movement in Denmark has awarded Emmelie with the title of European of the year 2013.
The European Union is not only politics but also culture and singing. The Eurovision Song Contest unites European citizens and Emmelie has shown that even though Denmark is a small country, we really have something to offer in Europe and we can win the hearts of Europe – as well as the ears, Jens Boe Andersen from the Danish European Movement explains.
The award is given every year to a person that has played a role in Europe during the year. It is the biggest accolade in Denmark for a positive European commitment. Before Emmelie usually politicians like the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Danish Prime Minister and NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has received the award. Emmelie de Forest is the first winner of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix and Eurovision to receive it.
Emmelie de Forest is happy to receive the award and she says that music can bring people together and the Eurovision Song Contest plays a big role in this and with her music she also comes to European countries where the democracy is under pressure and she knows how important a good democracy is.
