Dimitris Kontopoulos is one of the most famous composers and producers in Greece and a member of the Eurovision “Dream team”, a team that has managed an unbelievable record: Participating 6 times and always placing in a top 7 position. (Belarus 07’-6th place, Ukraine 08’- 2nd place, Greece 2009- 7th place, Azerbaijan 2013 2nd- place, Russia 2014 -7th place, Russia 2016 – 3rd place).
At an interview he gave to People magazine in Greece he talked among others about the rules of the Eurovision song contest and the fact that the juries ranked Russia 5th.
“First of all we all accept the result of the contest. When we entered the contest we knew and agreed with the rules, so we knew that juries would have the 50% of the outcome”
And then when he is asked by the journalist if he believes that there is a problem with the rules, since 5 judges have the same power with the million viewers he says that:
“The problem is not with the rules, the problem is with how these are used by the judges. The problem starts from the moment that judges rank very low songs that they believe will be a threat to their favorite song. From last year we show in several countries that the Italian entry was ranked very low. This was not logical.
So since this is the case, the rules need to change. I believe that judges should vote only for their favorite 10 songs, as it used to be. I also agree that the juries should give 1/3 of the outcome. It is not fair for 5 people to have the same power with million of viewers”
