Dihaj visits Portugal and speaks about Eurovision
AZERBAIJAN – Diana Haciyeva and her band represented Azerbaijan at the last Eurovision Song Contest. Known artistically as Dihaj, she has recently participated at an event organised by OGAE Portugal, where she was able to visit the country that will be hosting Eurovision 2018.
At present Dihaj is working on pop music but she studied many other genres and is happy to perform different styles of music. She does however consider her pop music to be experimental, rather than straightforward pop. In 2016, Dihaj was a backing singer for Samra, who represented Azerbaijan that year.
Dihaj has said that her time on the Eurovision stage has been wonderful, even when she was chosen to represent her country in 2017, a decision which she said was not surprising. She says that there’s a world of difference between being the lead singer and a backing singer, however the important thing is to represent the country with pride. “I felt prepared to perform at Eurovision due to my experience as a backing singer”, says Dihaj.
The experience was amazing and it’s something that will not be easily forgotten by Dihaj who states that she went to Kiev to win and feels disappointed at placing 14th in Kiev but feels that it’s not the end of the world. She wouldn’t mind participating in the Contest once more but is motivated by doing other things at this moment in time. In Azerbaijan, Eurovision is shown between midnight and 3.30 am which provides a minor problem to create an obsessive following.
Regarding her time in Kiev, Dihaj says that she didn’t get the opportunity to meet Salvador Sobral, the Eurovision winner, even though both the Azerbaijan and Portugal delegations were based at the same hotel. She was impressed by the winning song, a different song and one which she feels, impressed the audience.
Portugal gave Azerbaijan 12 points, something which Dihaj is happy about, especially as the song “Skeletons” received very few points previously from the Portuguese jury. There is a new album which has been released by Dihaj this past week, which carries a message of hope.
