Olivier Rocher from France
The country is back, and is back the big way. Forget the out-dated Croatian entries of the 2000’s. Croatia has followed Eurovision “lighthouse” to join other countries in the 21st century! I really like (not to say love) this entry. Nina has a fabulous voice that truly reminds me of Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan’s voice. The song itself is good, and even very good. “Lighthouse” is a powerful mid-tempo ballad, with a Celtic flavour. This is the perfect recipe in my opinion. I could even call this song “mystical”. Croatia has struggled hard to be back in Eurovision, and given the effort Nina truly deserves a qualification! Nevertheless, the song has never been performed live yet, so let’s hope the girl can do the job. I have no doubts about that. For me “Lighthouse” is a 100% qualifier.
Luka Popovic from Serbia
Croatia is returning to the contest with a very strong entry, which is rightly among the bookie’s favourites. It’s commercial and should be received very well across Europe. Nina has excellent and strong vocals. The song builds really well leading to the powerful key change. Furthermore, the Celtic tones will likely be appealing to many Europeans. Should stick out among the entries this year and if Nina delivers good vocals, it should do well with the judges as well.
Jaime Solloso from Spain
This country is back but then again it almost always qualifies, I don’t feel that’s even a concern here. Nina does a fairly good enough job and it’s good to see Croatia back but the song has no real balance. It tries to be a mix of Irish folk style with Lena mixed in the middle. I like the sounds and echo of voice in the melody, it plays on the whole vibe of modern, independent music but I can’t see this having any impact on it’s own. Like most, staging will help and I hope they don’t decide to place something silly on stage just to cause effect.
