Belarus 2016: a closer look at the songs; vote for the best
Vasil Dimitrov (Bulgaria)
EDITORIAL – The national broadcaster, BTRC is in the finishing preparation phase for the national ESC-final-concert on 22nd of January (live on Belarus 1 and 24). The running order has already been revealed (as seen below) and there should be “introduction postcards” introducing every artist and their careers for the show, too – similar to “postcards of the countries” the last couple of ESC’s.
We at oikotimes.com (via Marco Boehm from Germany) thought it’s the perfect time to take a closer look on the songs and performances of the auditions. Sure, these are quite rough and not polished to the proper ESC-style but you sometimes find more truth in the audiences than in the final work.
To be capable of competing the ESC 2016 BTRC writes: “Right after the draw the organizers had a working meeting with the performers and discussed the aspects of preparation for the final show and legal cooperation of media holding with the contestants.”
Some final works are already accessible on social networks but we take a fair balanced look just on the auditions of every artist. That makes the national final even more interesting to watch. Not just to see if the favourites make it but also to see how the progress of every artist and song is. The winner of the national selection round will be defined by the audience by telephone and SMS vote that evening and will be the official representative of Belarus at Eurovision 2016 in Sweden.
Alexey Gross – Flame
A really average pop-song. The smart singer with big gestures sings the song in “crooning” technique. The relaxed crooning doesn’t fit to the big gestures, that feels irritating. The background singers are focused the whole song but just have a little part in the chorus. What do they thinking of? “Were do I get a coffee?” or “Oh no, time runs out on my parking ticket.” Who knows. But “much helps much”. Six people on stage won the ESC 22 times so far.
Chance to win the national final: nope
Chance for the ESC-final: Just when the people forgot all the songs he has a chance for the grand-final.
Sasha Zakharik – Glory Night
A nice combination between some back-beat jazzy tune and a late 60’s pop-tune. In my opinion the skirts and costume should remind the audience of the 60’s. The voice has a special timbre and she sings a little “blue”. That makes the song more interesting.
Chance to win the national final: It’s a smile tune with spices – everything must fit that evening.
Chance for the ESC-final: A special tune that has a small chance for the grand-final.
Valerya Sadovskaya – Not Alone
The songs starts very strong. (Well, it reminds one of Emmelie de Forest and Loreen together but is something own). Than the songs raises for a drop. But an inapt chorus lets the song fall. The background voices are not mixed very utile. Even the “Emmelie de Forest part” could not help giving me back the goose bumps.
Chance to win the national final: This song has potential after a mastering process. I’m looking forward the national show
Chance for the ESC-final: If it is mastered correctly the song goes straight into the grand-final.
Band „Radiovolna“ – Radiowave -Don’t Get Crazy
Everything about the Band is so 80’s and that is good. A catchy tune made out of the best what 80’s and early 90’s music has. A little funk-pop mixed with a dash of clean-funky guitar and electronic effects. Not a big voice but – in English language even more – it fits to the concept. In my opinion a few beats per minute too slow.
Chance to win the national final: It seems that Belarus is on a jazzy-80’s-music-wave. And this tune is exactly this.
Chance for the ESC-final: With some more beats per minute it ends in the mid field of grand-final.
Band „THE EM“ – Turn Around
A male-duet is a nice statement. The song is a perfectly build ballad. I hope it will start with grand piano and gets some electric guitars and strings. The audition’s version is a little to snappy and clean. I hope for biiig instrumentation. With the special harmonic parts, it stays in mind.
Chance to win the national final: If it’s “ballad-time” – this is the choice.
Chance for the ESC-final: If “THE EM” irradiate “ballad”, they go far in the grand-final.
Band “NAVI” – Gyeta Zyamlya (This Land)
This song bubbles along… but in a good way. You start to smile after a while. One strong fact is that this is the only song sung in mothers’ tongue. This can be important in the national final.
Chance to win the national final: I don’t know the power of national language in the voting process.
Chance for the ESC-final: nice … well … somewhere nobody ever remembers years later
Aleksandr Ivanov – How To Fly
A long-haired, big-nosed, smart-ass rock-voice singer with a fragile chorus is a very good combination. The voice fits perfectly to sad East-European or Russian ballads but he decided to sing an English song with a “female” tune. The listener feels a special tension and the singer takes over with charisma. This could be a surprise candidate for the ESC.
Chance to win the national final: As he is known in Belarus he is not just good but has a fame bonus.
Chance for the ESC-final: He has it all what ESC represents – everything is possible.
Anastasiya Malashkevich – Pray For Love
A big pop-rock voice. She uses the “belting” technique to have some kind of classical touch in the smoky timbre. But the break-beat is too fast and bustling. It feels breathless and in a hurry even if she is always in time. The whole composition needs a complete make-over to persist the ESC.
Chance to win the national final: If the people vote for the voice there is a chance.
Chance for the ESC-final: last third of semi-final (if the song stays like this)
Kirill Yermakov – Running To The Sun
A cool EDM-inspired song with good harmonic elements. It’s a “Ohrwurm” even after listen to it just twice or three times. Good breaks and voices. I simply like it. With a good mastering it can be a killer!
Chance to win the national final: I hope Belarus feels the potential.
Chance for the ESC-final: top 5 of grand final
NAPOLI – My Universe
Ok. This performance is nice… for a wedding. But the capacity of the performance/voices is already outbid. I see no chance of an increase for the national final. And that won’t be enough.
Chance to win the national final: very small
Chance for the ESC-final: no way
