PORTUGAL – After being blamed of plagiarism, it has come as a surprise that Diogo Piçarra has now pulled out of the Portuguese Eurovision final. The news comes as a major surprise since Diogo had stated that his song was original and he was the favourite to represent Portugal at their first Eurovision Contest Festival.
Diogo Piçarra made the announcement over social media, on his twitter page. He confirmed that the situation surrounding the originality of his song and the accusations of plagiarism now made it difficult to continue, especially as he didn’t consider the situation being experienced as music.
RTP have confirmed the singe’s withdrawal and that of the song, “Canção do Fim”. The song will now be replaced by the song which placed 8th in the second semifinal, “Mensageira”, which is performed by Susana Travasses. the final takes place this Sunday.
🇦🇿 Time for Aisel to film her postcard in Portugal for the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Aisel says: I feel lucky, because my postcard was filmed in this extraordinary place called Monsaraz. The unique experience of Monsaraz was completed by the balloon flight over the largest artificial lake in Europe and the infinite fields. I have to admit that before flying I was a little afraid … However, when we started to float in the air, the fear disappeared and I loved this wonderful trip. Last but not least, the staff was amazing, very friendly and helpful! I cannot wait to see the final result! #eurovision #oikotimes #allaboard #melfest #umk #DestinationEurovision #eestilaul #eestilaul2018 #srfesc #eurovisiongr

PORTUGAL – RTP and its national final is involved in a case of plagiarism after the favourite to win the final and represent Portugal at its first Eurovision festival in Lisbon, seems to have copied a song from the 70s.
It has been noted that the song by Diogo Piçarra, “Canção Do Fim” is very similar to a religious song which was famous in the 1970s, the song being “Abre os meus olhos”.
The song was actually not from Portugal but from Brazil, who in turn share the same language and this similarity has forced Diogo Piçarra to make an online statement to defuse the situation.
On social media he has stated that the songs are different and that any similarities are down to creating a song which follows a simple concept and is limited by the melody, since this is only possible up to a defined number.
He went on to state that labelling something as plagiarism is only aimed at destruction and that had he known there was a similarity, he would have created something else. He claims to have a clear conscious and that he feels that there is nothing more to the accusation.
At the moment, RTP have not stated anything regarding the claims and have simply proceeded with business as normal. this Friday will be the Grand Final of the Festival da Canção where the singer and song that will represent the host country shall be chosen.
THE NETHERLANDS – On 9 November 2017, AVROTROS announced Waylon as the Dutch entrant at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. Waylon had previously represented the Netherlands in 2014 as part of The Common Linnets alongside Ilse DeLange. Their song “Calm After the Storm” earned 238 points in the final, placing them second. Prior to the official presentation of the song on 3 March 2018, Waylon will present five songs – including the official Dutch entry for the Eurovision Song Contest – from his upcoming album The World Can Wait in the talk show called De Wereld Draait Door, hosted by Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and aired by NPO 1. Waylon also revealed that Hans Pannecoucke will once again be the stage director for Eurovision.
