Iceland 2017: Svala Björgvinsdóttir wins Söngvakeppnin


Svala Björgvinsdóttir sometimes known as simply Svala, Svala Björgvins, or Kali, is an Icelandic singer and songwriter. She is most notable for her 2001 song, “The Real Me”, from the album with the same title. She took up the stage name, “Kali”, after joining the house band Steed Lord. She will represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev. Svala is the daughter of Icelandic singer Björgvin Halldórsson. She started singing and recording at a very early age. Her first recording came out when she was 7 years old, when she sang backup on one of her father’s albums. She had her first number one hit in Iceland when she was 9 years old, when she sang a Christmas duet with her father called “Fyrir Jól”. Her second number one hit came out when she was 11 years old, with another Christmas hit called “Ég hlakka svo til”. She would also be known for more Christmas songs that became hits in Iceland.
