SWEDEN – Despite double tours and TV jobs in Greece: Helena Paparizou couldn’t refuse. Therefore, she and former bandmate Nikos Panagiotidis group Antique reunites for a single gig – and tells that they have barely met since they were divided.
We have always been very fond of each other, but we have not been able to hang out there, we have not managed, says Helena Paparizou.
She became a superstar in Greece. He chose to form a family and has also run a café and restaurants before joining Volvo. Now Helena Paparizou, 37, and Nikos Panagiotidis, 41, are reuniting their Swedish-Greek duo Antique for a single gig when “We who love the 90s” festival takes Gothenburg on Saturday 13 July.
“I already know nostalgia, I have butterflies in my stomach, it’s like when I was 17 and we started playing,” says Helena Paparizou when Nöjesbladet reaches her over the phone.
Actually she is fully booked in Greece all summer, partly with recordings of the fourth season of the Greek version of the talent song “The Voice” and partly with both a solo tour and a tour along with several other Greek great stars, such as Marinella, Kostas Makedonas and Ivi Adamo in a show that can almost be described as a Greek equivalent to the Diggiloo tour, but on large showrooms. But when she and Nikos Panagiotidis were asked to reunite their success duo to celebrate 20 years since the breakthrough, she couldn’t refuse.
– It felt so obvious that we had to do it. We broke through just in the late 90’s with Antique and I really love the 90’s. In addition, it will be so fun to meet old friends that we played with then, like Da Buzz, Aqua, lots of people, Helena says.
She and Nikos got to know each other in Gothenburg during their teens and broke through as Antique 1999 with songs like “Opa opa” and “Dinata dinata”. 2001 came the third in the Eurovision song contest on behalf of Greece with the song “(I would) Die for you”, but after four years of intensive work and touring together, the collaboration ended. In 2003 they split and Helena Paparizou invested in the solo career.
– Our contact after that was really small. Nikos acquired family and I continued to work. In Gothenburg, the communication among Greeks is very special too, you belong through the Greek association and via the church, she says and laughs.
– Simply put, we have always known about what we are doing, I have asked about Nikos and his children, he has heard about me. We have always been very fond of each other, but we have not been able to hang out there, we have not managed, says Helena Paparizou.
